"Greeny" is the most emblematic of the original 1959 Les Paul Standard guitars, which passed through the hands of three legendary guitarists.
Its first owner, Peter Green, acquired it just before joining John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and recording the album "A Hard Road" in 1967. He went on to use it extensively with Fleetwood Mac in concert and in the studio. Greeny can be heard on "Oh Well", "Black Magic Woman", "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)" and "Albatross", but in 1970 he sold it to his friend Gary Moore for a paltry sum (around £110!). Moore would make great use of it throughout his career, for example with Thin Lizzy on "Black Rose", but especially on "Parisienne Walkways" (LP "Back on the Streets"), which is considered the Irish guitarist's signature track. He paid tribute to Green in 1995, recording almost the entire "Blues for Greeny" album with the legendary Les Paul. Forced by financial difficulties, Moore sold the instrument in 2006 to Phil Winfield for an estimated $750,000 to $1.2 million. Greeny was subsequently purchased by various private collectors until 2014, when Metallica's Kirk Hammett bought it from Richard Henry for nearly $2 million. Apart from its pedigree, the Greeny is also known for the exceptional out-of-phase sound of its central selector position. The magnetic polarity of the neck pickup has therefore been reversed, as on the original Greeny.
