Column pa systems

The HK Audio ELEMENTS MK2 635 is a passive midrange/tweeter column module designed to build or expand an ELEMENTS MK2 sound reinforcement system. It is primarily intended for event providers, musicians, and technicians who need to adapt their system’s coverage to the size of the venue without adding more conventional speakers. This module does not operate on its own: it must be integrated into a compatible ELEMENTS MK2 configuration that provides amplification.

Key Features

  • 6 3.25-inch speakers paired with 6 Phase Plugs to form a compact line source.
  • 90° horizontal coverage to deliver sound across a relatively wide area in front of the system.
  • Multiple modules can be combined primarily to extend the midrange/treble coverage.
  • E-Connect MK2 system with SnapLock fasteners to assemble components without visible wiring between modules.
  • Nominal impedance of 12 ohms and a peak power handling capacity of 250 W—factors to consider when configuring the system.
  • Aluminum enclosure and corrosion-resistant steel grille designed for regular use in live performances.

What is the ELEMENTS MK2 635 used for?

The ELEMENTS MK2 635 reproduces the midrange/treble frequencies of an ELEMENTS MK2 system. Its six 3.25-inch transducers work with Phase Plug waveguides to form a line source rather than a conventional full-range speaker used on its own.

It should therefore be considered as part of a modular system and not as a standalone passive speaker to be connected directly to any amplifier. The complete setup must adhere to the recommended pairings for the ELEMENTS MK2 series.

Why add multiple modules?

Adding midrange/tweeter modules increases the length of the line array. In a properly configured system, this primarily serves to maintain higher sound levels and better intelligibility as the distance to the audience increases.

This modularity allows the system to be adapted to both small performances and venues requiring greater coverage. However, adding columns does not simply mean increasing the overall volume: the number of modules must remain consistent with the other components and the system’s amplification.

What area can it cover?

The specified horizontal dispersion is 90°. The system thus aims to provide even coverage of the audience while concentrating sound energy more effectively than a speaker that disperses sound very widely to the sides.

Actual coverage also depends on the number of modules used, their height, the room’s geometry, and the audience’s position. Therefore, the directivity figure alone is not sufficient to determine a system’s capacity for a given event.

How are the different components assembled?

The SnapLock system allows compatible modules to be mechanically locked together without tools. The audio connection between the components is made via the E-Connect MK2 interface, which eliminates the need to run speaker cables between each section of the column.

This design speeds up the setup and teardown of a portable system while maintaining a visually unobtrusive column. However, it requires the use of components designed for the ELEMENTS MK2 ecosystem.

Do I need an amplifier?

The ELEMENTS MK2 635 is passive and does not have built-in amplification. It must be powered by a compatible amplified module from the ELEMENTS MK2 configuration.

Its nominal impedance of 12 ohms and its peak power handling capacity of 250 W are particularly important to consider when multiple modules are combined. The system configuration should therefore not be determined based solely on these electrical specifications.

Does the system automatically adapt to the number of speakers?

In a compatible ELEMENTS MK2 configuration, the system’s processing takes into account the number of midrange/tweeter modules installed in order to apply the corrections specified for the configuration in use. This facilitates the transition from a compact setup to a line array with more modules without having to manually reconfigure the entire crossover.

This functionality is part of the complete ELEMENTS MK2 system. The 635 module itself remains a passive acoustic component without a standalone DSP.

Is it suitable for live performances and rental?

The aluminum enclosure keeps the weight down while offering a construction suitable for repeated setups. The steel grille is treated to resist corrosion, while the SnapLock mechanism eliminates the need for screws or external cables to connect the modules.

With a rated peak SPL of 132 dB, the 635 is designed for use in systems capable of handling professional live performances. However, a system’s actual performance depends on the number of modules, the subwoofers, the amplification, and the venue’s acoustics.
