Monitor controller
The IK Multimedia ARC Studio+ is a hardware-based room correction processor designed for music production, mixing, and mastering studios. Placed between the audio source and the monitor speakers, it measures and corrects the room’s acoustic irregularities to improve listening accuracy. It stands out for its standalone calibration without a computer, its integrated support for stereo and 2.1 systems, and its analog and digital audio connections.
Key Features
- ARC X Hardware Acoustic Correction: analyzes the speakers’ response within the room and applies frequency and phase correction, independently of audio production software.
- Standalone calibration: Allows you to measure the room directly at 1 or 3 positions using the ARC microphone, without a computer or additional audio interface.
- Automatic subwoofer management: dedicated output with adjustable level, crossover frequency, phase, and delay for 2.1 configurations.
- Analog and digital connections: balanced XLR/TRS combo inputs, XLR outputs, USB-C audio, and S/PDIF optical inputs/outputs for various monitoring setups.
- Three front-panel presets: recall correction profiles, speaker configurations, subwoofer status, and audio source selection.
- Two phase correction modes: Natural Phase with 1.4 ms latency and Linear Phase with 42 ms latency, to adapt the processing to the task at hand.
Acoustic Calibration and ARC X Correction
The ARC Studio+ uses a measurement microphone to analyze the acoustic response at the listening position. Its processor then applies a correction designed to compensate for certain frequency and phase irregularities related to the speakers and their interaction with the room. This correction helps you better evaluate the tonal balance of a mix, particularly in the low frequencies, without replacing proper speaker placement or any necessary acoustic treatment.
Calibration can be initiated directly from the unit at 1 or 3 positions, without a computer. For a more detailed analysis, the ARC X software allows you to take measurements at 7 or 21 positions and customize the target curves. Once the profile is loaded into ARC Studio+, the correction works independently of the computer and the digital audio workstation.
Automatic Subwoofer Management
ARC Studio+ supports both traditional stereo setups and 2.1 systems combining two monitor speakers with a subwoofer. Its dedicated output allows you to connect the subwoofer and integrate it into the calibration process without having to perform all the pairing adjustments with the main speakers separately.
During measurement, the system detects the subwoofer and automatically adjusts its level, crossover frequency, phase, and delay. These settings are designed to improve coherence between the subwoofer and the speakers in their overlap range, making it easier to control bass, kick drums, and low-frequency instruments during mixing.
Analog and Digital Connections
The balanced XLR/TRS combo analog inputs allow you to connect an audio interface, mixing console, or compatible monitoring controller. Two balanced XLR outputs then send the corrected signal to the speakers. A balanced mono TRS jack output is dedicated to the subwoofer, enabling a 2.1 system.
The USB-C audio input also allows you to stream audio directly from a compatible computer without needing an external audio interface for this connection. The S/PDIF optical inputs and outputs facilitate integration with a compatible digital audio system and eliminate the need for additional analog conversions when the signal remains in digital form. The USB-C connection is also used for communication with the ARC X software.
Audio Processing and Equalization Modes
The ARC Studio+ features 32-bit audio conversion and boasts a dynamic range of 120 dB(A), with a frequency response of 2 Hz to 87 kHz at -2 dB. These specifications pertain to the processor’s electronic performance. They allow it to be integrated into a professional monitoring setup without altering the speakers’ inherent acoustic performance.
Natural Phase mode applies correction with a specified latency of 1.4 ms, making it particularly suitable for monitoring applications requiring low latency. Linear Phase mode uses linear-phase processing with a latency of 42 ms, intended primarily for critical listening that does not require immediate audio feedback. A hardware relay bypass also allows you to compare the corrected signal with the unprocessed signal.
Listening Profiles and Daily Use
Three configuration presets are directly accessible via the front-panel controls. Each can store a calibration profile, speaker routing, subwoofer activation, and input source. This allows you to quickly switch from a stereo setup to a 2.1 configuration or recall different settings for your work sessions.
The ARC X software also allows you to customize the target response and simulate different listening systems to check the balance of a mix across multiple virtual reference setups. This feature requires the software and a USB connection to a computer. In its standard version, the ARC Studio+ comes with the ARC MEMS measurement microphone, the ARC X software, a USB cable, and an external power supply.
