Is the touch suitable for serious piano study?

The Responsive Hammer Compact II keyboard features 88 weighted keys with graduated hammer weighting from the bass to the treble. Its three-sensor system improves repetition detection when a key is played again before being fully released.

The CX-202 is still a digital piano with a compact action: it does not mechanically replicate the action of a real grand piano. Nevertheless, it offers the 88 weighted keys and three pedals needed to practice a piano repertoire under good conditions at home.

What piano sounds does the CX-202 offer?

The Harmonic Imaging engine is based, in particular, on individual stereo sampling of all 88 keys of the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano. Three SK-EX variations are available—Concert, Jazz, and Mellow—to adapt the piano’s character to the piece being played.

The CX-202 offers a total of 17 sounds, including electric pianos, organs, strings, harpsichord, vibraphone, and basses. The maximum polyphony of 192 notes provides ample headroom for using the sustain pedal and layering modes without quickly limiting the number of notes played.

Can two people play together or combine multiple sounds?

Dual mode overlays two sounds across the entire keyboard, while Split mode assigns different sounds to the left and right zones. Four-Hands mode divides the keyboard into two zones with comparable ranges.

This last feature is particularly useful for lessons: the teacher and student can play simultaneously on the same instrument without needing two pianos.

What learning tools are included?

The CX-202 includes a metronome, demo pieces, and a Lesson function featuring exercises by Burgmüller, Czerny, and Beyer, as well as compatible Alfred methods. The internal recorder can store up to three pieces for a total of approximately 10,000 notes.

The recorder operates via MIDI and stores performance data rather than an audio file. It’s convenient for reviewing a practice session directly from the piano.

What can you do with Bluetooth and the Kawai apps?

Bluetooth Audio receives sound from a smartphone or tablet and plays it through the piano’s speakers. This allows you to play along with a song or other audio source without connecting the device via an audio cable.

Bluetooth MIDI transmits performance data to a compatible app. It can be used, for example, with Kawai PianoRemote to access the piano’s settings and with PiaBookPlayer to view compatible musical content.

Bluetooth Audio and Bluetooth MIDI therefore serve two different functions. The CX-202’s Bluetooth Audio is used to receive music and does not mean that the piano can send its own sound to Bluetooth headphones.

Can you practice with headphones?

The CX-202 features Spatial Headphone Sound technology. Three spatial settings are available, and the piano also allows you to adjust the sound processing based on the type of headphones used, including open-back, closed-back, or in-ear models.

Playing with headphones eliminates the need to use the speakers when practicing at low volumes, which is particularly suitable for practicing in an apartment or in the evening.

How much space do you need at home?

The CX-202 measures approximately 136.5 cm wide, 40.5 cm deep, and 85.5 cm tall with the music stand folded down. Weighing 37 kg, it’s as heavy as a real upright piano: it’s designed to remain installed in one room rather than being moved around regularly.

The sliding keyboard cover protects the keys when the instrument is not in use. The Light Oak finish on the CX-202 LO model affects only the cabinet’s appearance and does not alter its musical functions.
