Column pa systems
The LD Systems MAUI 44 G3 is primarily designed for experienced mobile DJs, bands, and event service providers looking for a powerful column speaker system that’s quick to set up and capable of handling high-volume performances. With 3,600 W peak power, a maximum SPL of 133 dB, and a 15-inch woofer, it is clearly designed for professional use rather than as a starter sound system for beginners.
Key Features
- The maximum SPL of 133 dB provides ample headroom for performances where a more compact column system would reach its limits more quickly.
- The 120° x 25° coverage pattern provides ample horizontal coverage of the audience while concentrating more energy vertically.
- The column’s cardioid design reduces the rear-facing sound level by up to 18 dB between 100 Hz and 1 kHz, which helps limit feedback on stage.
- The 15-inch subwoofer cabinet extends down to 34 Hz to handle low frequencies without immediately requiring a separate subwoofer.
- The connection between the subwoofer and the column requires no additional audio cable, which speeds up setup and teardown.
- A second MAUI 44 G3 subwoofer can be added when the performance requires more low-frequency output or a cardioid subwoofer configuration.
What types of events is the MAUI 44 G3 suitable for?
The MAUI 44 G3 is ideal for mobile DJs, musicians, and event service providers who need a portable sound system that’s still robust enough for large-scale events. With a maximum sound pressure level of 133 dB, it’s particularly well-suited for performances where the music needs to maintain volume and impact in front of a sizable audience.
However, it is bulkier and more ambitious than a small column system designed for speeches, rehearsals, or small-scale events. Its value is best realized when the available power, bass response, and dispersion control are fully utilized.
How is the sound distributed in front of and behind the system?
The column combines 14 3.5-inch midrange drivers and four 1-inch compression drivers, with a specified coverage pattern of 120° horizontally and 25° vertically. This wide coverage reduces the need to aim multiple speakers at different sections of the audience.
The cardioid design simultaneously reduces the energy projected toward the rear of the column, with attenuation of up to 18 dB between 100 Hz and 1 kHz. On stage or in a reflective venue, this helps prevent too much of the system’s output from being directed toward the performers, the walls, or the rear of the setup.
Is an additional subwoofer necessary?
The MAUI 44 G3 already features a built-in 15-inch bass-reflex enclosure and delivers a frequency response down to 34 Hz. For a standard setup, it can therefore operate on its own without an additional external subwoofer.
For a performance requiring more low-frequency output, a second MAUI 44 G3 subwoofer can be added. This expansion can also be used to create a cardioid subwoofer configuration to better control the spread of low frequencies.
Does the system require a lot of wiring and setup time?
The column connects directly to the enclosure without an audio cable between the two components, and the system automatically detects its presence. For a sound engineer who regularly sets up and breaks down their equipment, this reduces the number of connections that need to be made on site.
The subwoofer features four built-in handles for easy transport. Its birch plywood construction with a polyurea coating and aluminum column make it suitable for a system designed to be moved regularly, even though it retains the format of a professional sound system with a 15-inch subwoofer.
Can music be streamed directly via Bluetooth?
Bluetooth 5.4 with the AAC codec receives audio from a smartphone, tablet, or other compatible source. It can be used for background music, a playlist, or a wireless audio source without adding an external Bluetooth receiver.
For a main DJ or live performance, the necessary audio sources and mixing equipment must still be provided depending on the setup used. Bluetooth does not replace a mixing console, a DJ controller, or the audio connections required for the various sources of the performance.
What does the DynX DSP Gen.2 processing do?
The second-generation DynX DSP manages the system’s operation and works with the built-in limiters when the signal level rises. Its primary role is to control the various components of the speaker and protect the system when it approaches its operating limits.
This management is built into the MAUI 44 G3 and therefore does not require an external speaker processor to operate the system as intended.
