Kompressor limiter gate

The Solid State Logic Bus Comp Classic is a 1U rack-mount analog stereo bus compressor designed for professional mixing studios and hybrid setups. Building on the legacy of SSL console compressors, it can be used on the master bus, instrument groups, or the drum track to control their dynamics. Its standout feature is the Variable VCA Drive, which allows you to choose between compression with minimal coloration and more pronounced analog saturation.

Key Features

  • Analog architecture with THAT 2181 VCA: replicates the operation of the classic SSL bus compressor to process a stereo mix or subgroup.
  • Variable VCA Drive: gradually adjusts harmonic coloration, from low-distortion operation to more pronounced saturation inspired by SSL 4000 consoles.
  • Six-position Attack, Release, and Ratio controls: make it easy to select settings and reproduce them in another session.
  • Auto Release Mode: Automatically adapts the compression release to signal variations.
  • Six-position side-chain high-pass filter: limits the influence of the kick drum and low frequencies on compression triggering.
  • Stereo external side-chain input: allows you to control gain reduction with another signal, particularly when exporting stems.

Mix and Drum Compression

On a master bus, the 2:1 ratio uses a gradual compression curve, known as a soft-knee. Gain reduction gradually kicks in when the signal exceeds the set threshold. This setting is suitable for subtle processing, while higher ratios are used to more effectively control level fluctuations.

On a drum bus, the attack settings determine how quickly the compressor responds to drum hits. A slower attack allows more of the initial transients to pass through, while a fast attack engages earlier on the peaks.

Adjustable Analog Color

The Variable VCA Drive affects the harmonic character of the processing. At its cleanest setting, the VCAs operate in a low-distortion, symmetrical configuration, in the spirit of SSL SuperAnalog consoles. As you increase the Drive, the circuit shifts to an asymmetric configuration and gradually introduces more harmonics.

This control allows you to maintain subtle coloration on a full mix or seek more pronounced saturation on a drum bus. At extreme settings, the processing can approach 10% total harmonic distortion. This level of coloration is therefore a creative choice rather than transparent compression.

Compression Settings

The Bus Comp Classic offers fixed-position settings for attack, release, and ratio. These allow you to easily recall the same values when returning to a mix or switching between projects.

Auto Release mode uses a two-stage release circuit that responds to the musical content. It reduces compression more quickly after loud passages and returns more gradually to its initial state during quieter sections. This operation avoids imposing a single release time on a musical program with constantly varying dynamics.

Low-Frequency Management

The high-pass filter built into the sidechain acts on the signal used to trigger compression, without directly filtering the low frequencies of the processed audio signal. By reducing the influence of low frequencies on the detector, it prevents a kick drum or a dominant bass line from systematically causing a significant gain reduction across the entire mix.

Its six settings allow you to adjust this sensitivity depending on the track. The filter is a setting that controls the compressor’s behavior, not an equalizer intended to directly modify the low end.

External Stereo Sidechain

The Bus Comp Classic can use an external stereo signal to control the compression applied to its main audio input. This feature is particularly useful for exporting the stems of a production separately while preserving the dynamic behavior of the full mix.

To do this, the full mix is sent to the external side-chain while each stem passes through the compressor in turn. The detector thus receives the same reference signal for each export, which helps preserve the gain reduction applied during the original mix.

This method requires additional audio routing to feed the side-chain inputs independently of the processed signal.

Studio Integration

The Bus Comp Classic is an external analog processor. To use it in a digital audio workstation, you must route the bus to be processed to the compressor and then capture its output signal. An audio interface with two available outputs and two line inputs, or a mixing console with appropriate routing, is therefore required.

Parallel compression can also be achieved by using an auxiliary bus in the software or on the mixing console to blend the processed signal with the original signal.

Its 1U rack-mount format makes it easy to install in a studio rack. However, integrating it requires analog connections and hardware routing, unlike a software compressor that is inserted directly into a session.
