Synthesizer
The Arturia MiniFreak 49 is a polyphonic hybrid synthesizer designed for sound design, production, and real-time performance. This version features a 49-key, full-size, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and aftertouch, while retaining the dual-digital-engine and analog-filter architecture that defines the MiniFreak. Its XYZ matrix and reorganized controls also provide more direct access to modulation and effects.
Key Features
- 49 full-size, semi-weighted keys, velocity-sensitive and equipped with aftertouch, providing more space for chords, melodic lines, and two-handed playing.
- Two digital engines with over 30 modes, including virtual analog, FM, wavetable, sampling, granular, and physical modeling synthesis.
- An analog filter per voice, complemented by an FM filter modulation function, to evolve the spectrum from smooth filtering to more complex textures.
- A touch-sensitive XYZ matrix that allows you to control multiple parameters simultaneously and use the finger’s contact surface as a third control axis.
- Voice Panning to distribute voices across the stereo field and add more movement to pads, chords, and sequences.
- MiniFreak V lets you replicate the synthesizer’s architecture on a computer and continue working on presets within a DAW.
Two engines for sound design
The MiniFreak 49 combines two digital engines capable of utilizing over 30 oscillator modes. This allows you to start with classic waveforms and then work with FM, wavetable, samples, granular synthesis, or physical modeling, depending on the type of texture you’re seeking.
The two engines can be combined to create more complex timbres before the signal passes through the analog filters. This setup allows you to quickly program a bass or lead sound, as well as build evolving pads and more experimental sounds.
Analog Filtering and Modulation
Each voice has its own analog filter. The filter can be used to attenuate certain frequencies, emphasize a specific part of the spectrum with resonance, or shape the timbre using envelopes and other modulation sources.
Applying FM to the filter expands this capability by directly modulating its behavior. Depending on the settings, it can add subtle movement or produce much more pronounced variations. The modulation matrix then allows you to link oscillators, filters, effects, and various modulation sources to maintain an evolving sound.
XYZ Control and Real-Time Performance
The XYZ matrix combines modulation, performance, and navigation on a touch-sensitive surface. Movements along two axes allow you to control multiple parameters simultaneously, while the finger’s contact area provides a third modulation value. A single gesture can thus transform multiple dimensions of a preset without having to manipulate several controls in succession.
Assignments use color-coding to make routing easier to read. The surface is also used to browse presets and displays sound-related visualizations, consolidating multiple performance operations into a single control area.
49 Keys for Expanded Play
The full-size 49-key keyboard is semi-weighted and responsive to velocity and aftertouch. This range allows more room to spread chords and melodies across the keyboard or to play with both hands without having to change octaves as often. Aftertouch also allows you to vary a parameter after the initial key press when it is assigned to a modulation.
The pitch and modulation wheels are located to the left of the keyboard for direct control while playing.
Sequencer, Arpeggiator, and Effects
The sequencer and arpeggiator are accessible directly from the front panel, allowing you to create and modify patterns without always having to use a computer. They can be combined with modulation options to make a sequence evolve as it plays.
Three effects slots allow you to process the sound right within the synthesizer. Direct access to them makes it easy to switch between effects and quickly add color, space, or transformation to a preset.
Integration with MiniFreak V
MiniFreak V transposes the MiniFreak’s architecture into a software instrument that can be used within a DAW. Presets can thus be worked on across both the hardware synthesizer and its virtual version, allowing you to retain physical controls during creation and then continue editing and integrating the sound into a digital project.
