Description
The Audio-Technica ATH-M50xSTS-USB is a wired, closed-back headset designed for streaming, podcasting, and content creation on a computer. It combines the 45-mm drivers from the ATH-M50x studio headphones with a cardioid condenser microphone inspired by Audio-Technica’s 20 Series. Its USB connection and built-in monitor system allow you to manage both audio monitoring and voice capture using a single device.
Key Features
- 45 mm drivers from the ATH-M50x, with a claimed frequency response of 15 to 28,000 Hz.
- Closed-back, circumaural design that minimizes external noise and sound leakage into the microphone.
- Cardioid condenser microphone on a flexible boom arm, allowing the capsule to be positioned close to the mouth and minimizing the pickup of ambient noise.
- Mute function activated by rotating the arm, allowing you to quickly mute the microphone during a live broadcast.
- Adjustable sidetone, so you can hear your own voice in the headset while speaking.
- USB-A connection with included USB-C adapter, digital conversion up to 24-bit/96 kHz, and two sets of interchangeable ear cushions.
Design and Sound Quality
Based on the acoustic architecture of the ATH-M50x, the ATH-M50xSTS-USB features 45 mm dynamic drivers. Audio-Technica highlights its detailed sound reproduction and extended low-frequency response. This allows you to listen to your program, follow a soundtrack, or monitor the audio elements of your broadcast.
Its closed-back design and over-ear ear pads, which wrap around the ears, provide passive isolation. This helps reduce external distractions and sound leakage that might be picked up by the microphone, without completely blocking out ambient noise.
Cardioid Microphone for Streaming and Podcasting
Inspired by the 20 Series microphones, the cardioid condenser microphone prioritizes sounds coming from the front of its capsule. This directionality helps reduce the pickup of noise from the sides and rear, particularly in a home streaming environment.
Its flexible arm allows you to position the microphone near the corner of your mouth and maintain a comfortable position for voice recording. To mute the mic during a live stream, simply lift the arm. The signal is restored when you lower it again, without having to search for a control in your software.
Built-in Sidetone for Monitoring Your Voice
The ATH-M50xSTS-USB features a Sidetone circuit that lets you hear your own voice through the headphones while you speak. This feature makes it easier to monitor your performance when you’re streaming content, recording a podcast, or interacting with your audience.
A dial on the ear cup lets you turn this sidetone on or off with a single press, then adjust its level. This allows you to adjust the volume of your voice without directly changing the microphone level sent to your computer.
Two sets of ear cushions to customize your listening experience
The headphones come with two pairs of interchangeable ear pads. The mesh fabric and faux leather ear pads, which come pre-installed, promote airflow against your ears. They’re a great option for long streaming sessions, though comfort depends on your head shape.
The second pair features the same ear pads as the ATH-M50x. According to Audio-Technica, they prioritize passive noise isolation and sound reproduction. You can switch between the two sets depending on your environment and listening preferences.
The adjustable headband, swivel ear cups, and foldable design make it easy to adjust the headphones and store them. They weigh approximately 330 g, excluding the cable.
USB Connection and Computer Compatibility
The ATH-M50xSTS-USB features a 2-meter fixed cable with a USB-A plug. The included USB-A-to-USB-C adapter also allows you to connect it to a compatible USB-C port. The connection carries both headphone and microphone signals and provides power to the headset, eliminating the need for an external audio interface.
Compatible with supported Windows and Mac computers, it is automatically recognized via USB. Its digital conversion system supports resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Then simply select the ATH-M50xSTS-USB as the input and output device in the audio settings of your computer or streaming software.
