Folk guitar
Left-handed model While the Gibson J-185 wasn't as successful as the J-45™, SJ-200™ and Hummingbird™, it was nonetheless praised by many musicians as one of the finest acoustic guitars ever devised by Gibson.
Introduced in 1951, the J-185 is inspired by the design of the Gibson L-5 models of the 1920s, significantly more compact than an SJ-200 and featuring a short 24.75" scale. The GIBSON J-185 Century 12-Fret Left Handed (OCJB8512EBL) is an evolution of the original 14-Fret J-185, offered in a 12-Fret version for the first time in current production.
The 12-Fret feature consists in repositioning the neck, which comes out of the body from the twelfth fret, with the bridge also pushed outwards, while keeping the same scale (24.75"). The effect of this design is to let the soundboard vibrate more freely and to soften string tension. The entire construction combines traditional woods with a Sitka spruce top, mahogany body and neck, and rosewood fingerboard (19 frets). A classic combination in the best sense of the word, providing an excellent balance of warmth and clarity, with a strong midrange. The GIBSON J-45 Century 12-Fret is a fundamentally versatile folk guitar, with great projection, but with features that will appeal in particular to finger-pickers and guitarists who attack the strings in moderation.
