In search of this versatility, Duff used his first musician's fee to buy a Fender Jazz Bass® Special equipped with a Precision® split-coil pickup in the neck position and a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position. He then replaced the original single-coil bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack Jazz Bass®, eliminating any hum and adding even more power.

A few years later, Duff received as a gift a bass with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound P-Bass® in neck position. The pickup's large-diameter Alnico 5 magnets and high output brought a new dimension to his sound. He then began combining this pickup with the Hot Stack Jazz Bass in bridge position, obtaining a powerful combination rich in grain, bass and attack.

This duo quickly became Duff's signature sound, used on numerous recordings and world tours.
