Overdrive, distortion & fuzz effect pedal
Char, the famous Japanese guitarist, has always had several distortion pedals that he loves. Among them, Vemuram took a close look at his Klon Centaur, which he chose with care and used for a long time. Vemuram also tested several of their own Klon Centaur, including one that was particularly renowned for its "exceptional" sound. Vemuram also explored the boost/gain of the Roland CE-1 and Watkins Copicat, devices Char has been using for years and which are part of his signature sound. By combining these boosts/gains with his distortion, Vemuram wanted to create a pedal that captured all these nuances of sound. So Char and Vemuram tested, tweaked and refined several prototypes, based on Char's feedback after using them on stage. The result? An all-new, versatile, moderate-gain distortion sound.
Char's personal involvement in development
During the development phase, Vemuram was fortunate to be able to use Char's personal gear, which he has used and cherished for years. This includes his legendary amps, his current pedalboards, his Watkins Copicat and, of course, his iconic guitars. From his famous Mustangs, his 59' Burgundy Mist Stratocaster, to his SGs, and of course his P90s-equipped Les Paul Gold Top. Vemuram has integrated his gear as much as possible into the process, to fine-tune and test the prototypes in real-life conditions, with the equipment he uses on stage.
Two sounds in one luxurious pedal
During development, two prototypes in particular stood out for Char. Although the circuits were slightly different, the results were quite similar, but with very distinct nuances. Char couldn't decide between the two sounds until the very end. He actually wanted both, in his live concerts, so Vemuram decided to integrate both sounds into a single pedal. The first sound has a warm, vintage feel, while the B-channel (Bright channel) is brighter, more aggressive and powerful, with a more pronounced attack. Each channel has its own Level setting and can be activated via the dedicated footswitch.
Practical settings for fine-tuning the sound
In addition to the Spiritone's main settings, the Sat (saturation) trimmer can be used to fine-tune the saturated sound produced by tube amps' power tubes. There's also an On/Off switch for the input buffer circuit. Saturation can be adjusted according to the combination of equipment and room acoustics, to perfectly suit each situation.
Product quality and unique specifications
The Spiritone is built with high-quality custom components such as footswitches, custom input/output jacks and capacitors, as well as rare N.O.S. (New Old Stock) components. This pedal has been designed to focus not only on sound, but also on details like the custom-colored ash-white bakelite knobs, for a unique finish.
