The Alpha 65 Evo combines a 16.5 cm woofer with a Slatefiber cone and a 25 mm aluminum inverted-dome tweeter. This configuration allows for precise control of bass, midrange, and high-frequency details without artificially emphasizing certain frequencies.

A Slatefiber cone developed and manufactured in France

The Slatefiber cone is developed and manufactured in Focal’s workshops in France. It combines non-woven recycled carbon fibers with a thermoplastic polymer.

This design strikes a balance between rigidity, lightness, and damping. In practice, it helps the woofer reproduce transients, bass, and the midrange with sufficient precision to control the placement of the various elements in the mix.

The Alpha 65 Evo also features a 15 mm MDF cabinet and a large-diameter laminar port. This bass-reflex design helps extend the low-frequency response while minimizing airflow noise.

Dual 80 W amplification optimized for near-field monitoring

Both drivers have their own Class D amplifiers: 55 W for the low-midrange woofer and 25 W for the tweeter, for a combined total of 80 W.

This bi-amplification allows each driver to be powered separately and achieves a maximum sound pressure level of 104 dB SPL at one meter. The Alpha 65 Evo thus maintains a dynamic headroom sufficient to capture the attack of a drum kit, the nuances of a vocal, or changes in volume within an arrangement.

Since the amplification is built right in, no external power amplifier is needed.

Three inputs for easy studio integration

The rear panel features three analog inputs:

• a balanced XLR input;
• a balanced 6.35 mm TRS jack input;
• an unbalanced RCA input.

To connect a pair of Alpha 65 Evo speakers to an audio interface, you’ll need two cables: one for the left output and one for the right output. A balanced connection via XLR or TRS jack is recommended when the interface has this type of output, particularly to minimize noise on long cables.

The RCA input allows you to use a source equipped with an unbalanced line output. For a computer without a true line output, using an audio interface remains the most suitable solution.

Settings to Adapt the Sound to the Room

The LF Shelving control allows you to adjust the bass level by up to ±6 dB. A reduction may be helpful when the speaker is placed near a wall or in a corner, positions that tend to artificially boost low frequencies.

The HF Shelving control adjusts the treble by up to ±3 dB. It can compensate for a highly absorptive room or, conversely, an overly bright environment with many hard surfaces.

In an acoustically balanced room, start with both controls set to 0 dB. Then make small adjustments after listening to several reference tracks you know well.

Sensitivity can also be set to 0 or +6 dB. The +6 dB mode provides a higher output level when the audio interface or converter’s output is relatively low.

How should you position the Focal Alpha 65 Evo speakers?

The Alpha 65 Evo speakers are designed for near-field listening, at a distance between 40 cm and 3 meters from the listener.

Place both speakers vertically, facing your listening position, with the tweeters approximately at ear level. Ideally, the speakers and your head should form an equilateral triangle to achieve a coherent stereo image.

Monitor stands make it easier to adjust the height and free up space on your desk. Isolating pads or foam can be useful if the furniture transmits vibrations, but they are no substitute for proper speaker placement.

If the speakers must be placed near a wall or in a corner, gradually adjust the LF Shelving setting to reduce bass boost.

After approximately 15 minutes without an audio signal, the Alpha 65 Evo automatically enters standby mode and consumes less than 0.5 W. This feature can be disabled using the Auto Standby switch located on the back.

Mounting inserts also allow for wall or ceiling mounting. For the Alpha 65 Evo, Focal recommends M6 screws with a 70 mm center-to-center spacing. Mounting must be performed using a compatible bracket and installed by a qualified professional.
