The Vintage Guitar Renaissance at Murphy Lab

For 25 years, Tom Murphy has practiced reproducing the look and feel of vintage guitars. Based on this expertise, Gibson collaborated with the master luthier to invent a new varnish formula that perfectly imitates the imperfections typical of 1950s/60s nitrocellulose, and to develop special manufacturing techniques. Each craftsman working in the Murphy Lab has been personally trained by Tom Murphy to become an expert in the aging process.

Care

Nitrocellulose varnish, as on vintage Gibson instruments, plays a major role in the instrument's "breathing" thanks to its porous nature (vibrations are not muffled by the varnish). On the other hand, this varnish is relatively sensitive to contact with the plastics and foams of certain stands, as well as to certain excessively detergent cleaning products. To avoid damaging your guitar, we recommend Hercules stands with specially formulated, non-abrasive foams; for maintenance, Gibson's Vintage Restoration Kit ensures effective, risk-free cleaning and polishing.
