The Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 is a 2-channel DJ controller designed for beginners, even those with no prior experience. It features a layout similar to the DDJ-400, the industry standard in the entry-level segment, and connects to a PC, Mac, smartphone, or tablet. Thanks to the Smart Fader and the tutorials built into rekordbox, you can pull off your first transitions without having to learn about sync or EQ beforehand. You can choose between rekordbox and Serato DJ Lite; both are free to use once the controller is connected.

The DDJ-FLX4 helps you avoid the classic beginner’s pitfall: learning on equipment that’s too complex, where every setting has to be adjusted manually. Thanks to the Smart Fader and Smart CFX features and the built-in tutorials in rekordbox, you can start mixing even from scratch, at your own pace, without having to understand all the concepts before you even touch the decks. The DDJ-FLX4 is perfect whether you want to practice on a smartphone or tablet (multi-device compatibility, Bluetooth® with rekordbox for iOS/Android) or if you want to live-stream your sets with a microphone via the USB audio output.

Smart Fader and Smart CFX: Mix Without Mastering Sync from Day One

Sync (the automatic synchronization of tempo between two tracks) is normally something you have to activate and monitor yourself, which requires a good ear and practice. Smart Fader takes care of this for you: as soon as you move the crossfader (the horizontal transition slider) or the track faders (the volume sliders for each deck), the BPM, volume, and bass adjust automatically—even when transitioning between two different music styles. In practice, you can seamlessly transition between two tracks from your very first session, even before you can spot a tempo mismatch by ear. The Smart CFX applies a combination of effects with a single gesture—using the dial—rather than requiring you to select and adjust multiple effects separately, as you would on a more advanced controller.

Each deck also features 8 pads for triggering Hot Cues (start points placed on a track to jump to a specific section), a Sampler (sound clips played alongside the music), or a Beat Loop (the automatic repetition of a bar). This lets you add effects or loop back to a section without having to improvise a complex sequence at the last minute.

rekordbox, Serato, streaming: what’s free and what isn’t

rekordbox and Serato DJ Lite are free to use, with no time limit, once the controller is connected. You’re free to test both before settling on your workflow, and upgrade to Serato DJ Pro later via a license if you want to take things further, once you know what you really need.

The DDJ-FLX4 also provides access to TIDAL, Beatport Streaming, Beatsource, and SoundCloud Go+, but these platforms require a separate subscription: you don’t have to subscribe to them to mix; they’re just an option if you want to improvise a set from an online catalog without preparing your library in advance.

USB audio output: mix your voice without buying external gear

The DDJ-FLX4 mixes the microphone audio directly with the music and sends it through a single USB audio output. So you only need a single device to stream or record—no need to buy a separate mixer or sound card—which is handy if you want to MC over your sets or stream live on social media right from the start (this feature is unavailable if a Bluetooth® device is connected).

DDJ-FLX4 vs. DDJ-400: What’s Changed

The DDJ-400, Pioneer DJ’s long-standing entry-level model, is no longer sold new, but it remains a good point of reference for understanding what the FLX4 brings to the table. The DDJ-400 worked exclusively with rekordbox, whereas the DDJ-FLX4 lets you choose between rekordbox and Serato DJ Lite. Most importantly, the DDJ-400 didn’t offer Smart Fader or Smart CFX: sync and effects had to be managed entirely manually right from your first sessions. The DDJ-FLX4 builds on this proven foundation and adds this layer of assistance, delaying the technical learning curve so you can focus first and foremost on the joy of mixing.
