Synthesizer

The Roland JUPITER-08 is a compact polyphonic synthesizer from the Roland Boutique series, designed to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the JUPITER-8. Inspired by this iconic synthesizer from the 1980s, it combines vintage sound architecture, front-panel controls, and modern music-making features. Bundled with its 25-key K-25m keyboard, it’s aimed at electronic musicians and producers who want to program their own sounds, compose, and perform in an easily transportable format.

Key Features

  • Synthesis architecture inspired by the original JUPITER-8, with an advanced polyphony mode capable of up to 32 voices for playing chords and creating layered textures.
  • Numerous dedicated knobs and sliders for directly adjusting oscillators, filters, envelopes, and modulations.
  • 17 types of multi-effects, including Roland’s stereo chorus, complemented by a delay and reverb offering five types and a Shimmer mode.
  • A 64-step, two-part polyphonic sequencer with up to eight notes per step and parameter movement recording.
  • USB-C audio/MIDI interface, traditional MIDI connections, and external clock input to integrate the synthesizer into a production setup.
  • Includes the Roland K-25m keyboard, a built-in speaker, and power via four AA batteries or USB-C for playing without a complex setup.

Synthesis and Polyphony

The JUPITER-08 builds on the synthesis principles of the JUPITER-8 with an architecture that allows you to manipulate oscillators, filters, envelopes, and modulations. This lets you build a bassline, develop a pad, or gradually change the timbre of a sound during a sequence.

Roland has also refined voice management and pitch fluctuations to recreate certain behaviors of vintage synthesizers. The advanced polyphony mode increases the maximum to 32 voices, allowing you to play more notes simultaneously—especially for extended chords and passages with sustained notes.

Controls and Sound Design

The JUPITER-08’s front panel features numerous easily accessible sliders and knobs. This layout allows you to adjust essential parameters without having to rely on menus all the time. For example, you can gradually open the filter, adjust a sound’s attack, or vary a modulation while playing.

The 17 types of multi-effects let you transform sounds, while Roland’s stereo chorus, delay, and reverb offer additional features. The reverb, in particular, offers five types and a Shimmer mode that adds an octave-shifted component to the reverberated signal—useful for creating evolving pads and atmospheres.

Sequencer and Arpeggiator

The two-part polyphonic sequencer lets you program patterns of up to 64 steps, with a maximum of eight notes per step. It’s equally suited for creating bass lines and melodies as well as programming chord sequences. Recording parameter movements allows the sound to evolve automatically during playback.

The arpeggiator generates patterns based on the notes played, while the Hold function sustains the notes without requiring you to keep the keys pressed. These tools facilitate rhythmic experimentation and real-time sound modifications, which are particularly useful in electronic music and live performance.

Connections and Music Production

The JUPITER-08 features a USB-C audio/MIDI interface for connecting to a computer and music production software. The audio connection transmits the synthesizer’s sound, while MIDI is used to exchange performance and control data.

The MIDI IN and OUT connections also allow you to connect the module to a control keyboard or other compatible instruments. An external clock input facilitates synchronization with electronic equipment, particularly for running multiple sequencers at the same tempo.

Keyboard and Portability

The Roland JUPITER-08 comes with the K-25m keyboard, featuring 25 velocity-sensitive keys. This keyboard also serves as a docking station and allows the module to be placed flat or at two different angles. Its compact range is well-suited for sound programming and playing short patterns. For a wider keyboard, you can use an external MIDI controller.

The built-in speaker lets you play and work without an additional monitoring system. An audio output and a headphone jack are also available for integrating the instrument into a studio setup or an amplification system.

With its compact size, silver sides, and power supply via four AA batteries or USB-C, the JUPITER-08 fits easily into a small production space. The K-25m keyboard and four AA batteries are included, allowing you to start playing without an external keyboard or AC adapter.
