Synthesizer

The Roland n/vision is a wavetable digital synthesizer from the Roland Boutique series, designed for sound design, electronic music production, and live performances. Its two-part architecture combines multiple synthesis layers, advanced modulation options, and physical controls to create and shape sounds in real time. Featuring a white finish and a compact keyboard, it’s ideal for use both in the studio and on the go.

Key Features

  • Two-layer wavetable synthesis: blend and modulate two wavetables to build evolving timbres, pads, basses, and experimental sounds.
  • Two-part architecture: Dual and Split modes let you layer two sounds or assign them to different zones of the keyboard.
  • Modulation and Wave Shaper: Evolve waveforms, add harmonics, and create sonic movement using the Step LFO and filters.
  • Built-in Effects: 17 types of multi-effects, a delay, and five types of reverb with a Shimmer function to enrich textures.
  • 64-step polyphonic sequencer: Program up to eight notes per step across two parts and record parameter movements.
  • Portable design and connections: USB-C audio/MIDI interface, MIDI IN/OUT, external clock input, and battery or USB-C power.

Wavetable Synthesis and Sound Architecture

The Roland n/vision uses wavetable synthesis, allowing you to scan through different waveforms within a single oscillator. By varying their position while playing, you can gradually transform a sound’s harmonic content—for example, to create a pad that evolves without changing the notes being played.

The synthesizer features two independent parts, Upper and Lower, each combining two layers of wavetables. You can blend these layers to build more complex timbres. Dual mode layers the two parts, while Split mode divides them across the keyboard—for example, to play a bass line on the left and a melody on the right.

Modulation and Timbre Design

The n/vision allows you to modulate several synthesis parameters, including the position of the wave tables, the balance between the layers, and the pitch of the oscillators. The Step LFO introduces step-by-step variations, useful for creating rhythmic movements, pulsed sounds, or repetitive transformations. The Spread control also allows you to widen the stereo image.

The Wave Shaper function transforms waveforms through nonlinear processing that generates new harmonics. When combined with the various filter models and the analog-modeling filter with Drive, it allows you to shape the spectral content of sounds, ranging from a filtered texture to a timbre richer in harmonics.

Effects and Sound Processing

The Roland n/vision features 17 types of multi-effects, including the JUNO chorus, as well as a dedicated delay and five types of reverb. These effects allow you to add movement, repeat certain notes, or extend sounds in a reverberant space.

The Shimmer function adds an octave-transposed component to the reverberated signal. It can be used, in particular, to create ethereal pads or sustained textures from relatively simple sounds.

Sequencer and Arpeggiator

The two-part polyphonic sequencer offers 64 steps and can record up to eight notes per step. It allows you to program chords, bass lines, and melodic patterns across both parts of the synthesizer. Recording parameter movements adds a dynamic element to sequences without requiring constant adjustment of the controls.

An arpeggiator complements these functions to generate patterns from played notes. This allows you to build a repetitive foundation and then adjust the waveforms, filters, and effects during playback.

Controls and Programming

The n/vision’s control panel features knobs, sliders, and buttons that provide access to the main sound parameters. You can adjust the oscillators, envelopes, filters, and modulations directly from the instrument—especially to evolve a sound during a sequence or performance.

The menus provide access to additional settings. This layout combines immediate controls with more detailed programming, which is useful for creating custom sounds.

Connections and Studio Integration

The USB-C audio/MIDI interface allows you to connect the n/vision to a computer to exchange MIDI data and transmit audio digitally. The MIDI IN and OUT connections are used to communicate with a master keyboard, a hardware sequencer, or other compatible instruments.

An external clock input allows you to synchronize the n/vision’s rhythmic operation with compatible equipment. The n/vision can thus be integrated into a setup combining multiple synthesizers or electronic devices.

Keyboard and Mobile Use

The Roland n/vision features a compact 25-key keyboard, ideal for programming sequences, melodic lines, and bass parts. For playing a wider range with both hands, an external MIDI keyboard may be preferable.

Its white finish, matching side panels, and Roland Boutique form factor make it easy to set up on a desk or in a mobile setup. The built-in speaker allows for direct monitoring, so you can work without external amplification. Powered by four AA batteries or USB-C, it’s also easy to use away from a fixed setup.
