The "Thermally Aged" process subjects the essences to accelerated drying through exposure to high temperatures. The Murphy Lab collection was inaugurated in 2021, with a dedicated area created within the Custom Shop. The instruments created in this new department are incredible recreations of iconic Gibson models, true clones of the Golden Era. For 25 years, Tom Murphy has practiced reproducing the look and temperament of vintage guitars. Based on this expertise, Gibson collaborated with the master luthier to invent a new varnish formula that perfectly imitates the imperfections typical of 1950s/60s nitrocellulose, and to develop special manufacturing techniques.
Each craftsman working at the Murphy Lab has been personally trained by Tom Murphy to become an expert in the ageing process. Sold with Custom Shop case and certificate of authenticity. CareThe nitrocellulose varnish, as on vintage Gibson instruments, plays a major role in the instrument's 'breathing' thanks to its porous nature (vibrations are not muffled by the lacquer). On the other hand, this varnish is sensitive to contact with the plastics and foams of certain stands (we recommend the Hercules brand), as well as to certain excessively detergent cleaning products.
